Synopsis
Elza is an intimate portrait of Elza Soares, telling the story of one of Brazil’s greatest singers. With her razor-sharp tongue, she embodies the soul of the Brazilian people. In the film, she becomes the narrator and mythmaker of her own life, weaving a diary of memories and imaginings. The film is an encounter between Brazilian music and Brazilian cinema. Its archival material is crafted from fragments of Brazilian films featuring key Black artists, transforming Elza into a multifaceted mirror of the profound political and artistic struggles and transformations faced by Brazil’s Black movement—especially Black women—over the past century. Through her body and voice, we see and hear Brazil—a living radiography of a nation in upheaval.
